Bring your telescope or share one of ours. Meet in the parking lot of the Owners' Club. Share your knowledge or start your star gazing adventure. Check out the stars and night objects with a telescope. A clear sky with no prominent moon, once properly dark adapted, is a beautiful thing. Depending on the time of year, a subtle band of smoky light constitutes the outline of our galaxy and away from bright town and city lights is a showy splendor with bright spots, voids and intricate rivers of light.
Sponsored by The Galena Territory Association and The Galena Astronomical Society. Call Recreation Coordinator Sue Young at 815-777-2000.
Select SaturdaysVisit Belden School, 52 Heatherdowns Lane in The Galena Territory, on first and third Saturdays June through October from 10 a.m. until noon. Volunteer docents provide FREE tours. Contact Belden School Preservation Chair Linda Niessner at email@example.com to schedule a private visit or group tour.
Belden School was built in 1859. The school was named after Thomas Belden, an early settler and a school trustee. The stone structure is located on a thickly wooded hillside flanked by a steep gully on the downhill side. There was no electricity, no running water, and no bathrooms until 1880 when two outhouses were built at a cost of $17 each.
One teacher instructed all the students. All grades were taught at the same time. Often the teacher was not much older than the students. The last classes were held in 1943 when consolidation of small districts occurred. Find out more about the Little School That Taught Big Lessons
